Genealogy and Reality TV join for "Relative Race" TV Program
Brigham Young University TV’s (BYUtv) genealogy-based competitive reality TV show, “Relative Race” will return for a third season this year, and you have a unique opportunity to see a premier episode here in Houston !!!
Clayton Library Friends, Houston Genealogical Forum and Houston Public Library/Clayton Library, Center for Genealogical Research will be hosting the screening of "Relative Race" on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Clayton Library, Carriage House, at 5300 Caroline from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm.
Following the screening, there will also be a short presentation about DNA. Refreshments will also be served and all are welcome !!!

“Relative Race” is similar to the CBS hit show “The Amazing Race,” but instead of racing around the world to find adventure, "Relative Race" features four, two-person teams who race across the country to find their long-lost relatives. "We are proud to join forces with BYUtv once again to produce a third season of 'Relative Race' and are excited to share with viewers a few new aspects of the series, including new routes, new contestants, new cities and new challenges," said Dan J. Debenham, executive producer of the show. "This season continues to deliver the heartwarming drama, shocking discoveries and surprising adventures that audiences have come to love and expect from this show."
This season — which kicks off in Washington D.C. -- teams will travel for 10 days, completing two challenges every day, with only paper maps, a rental car and a flip phone to help them. To help them find their way through strange cities and complete their two daily challenges, the contestants will receive instructions by text message that will hopefully lead them to discover new relatives. They will then be asked to stay overnight with a new relative that they meet in each city. The team who finishes last each day receives a strike. Three strikes and, well, you know how it goes. Teams will be eliminated along the way until the final event, where there will be a $50,000 reward for the winning team. Challenges for this season include figuring out a 15-piece slide puzzle, learning how to battle wildfires and answering trivia questions.
According to Tyler Hinton, who represents the major television network BYUtv, "they are launching the third season of the popular genealogy reality show “Relative Race” and contacted Houston Genealogical Forum and Clayton Library Friends to host a screening of an episode !!! Per Hinton “Relative Race,” consists of four teams competing for a $50,000 grand prize and taking a 10-day journey across the country. Using the contestant’s DNA as a roadmap, this first-of-its-kind genealogy-based reality show is about completing challenges, racing against the clock, and discovering unknown relatives." Hinton said "we feel that the show will be of interest to your members due to its focus on genealogy and its local connections. Much of the premiere episode was filmed in the Houston area where one of the teams was racing, and another team lives in the area." Also "the winding roads lead contestants to surprising familial connections from legends such as Elvis Presley to people closer than they expected. Audiences will witness how the contestants react to meeting their family members for the first time, as well as having to spend the night in their homes — an experience that is emotionally fulfilling and answers many questions for all four team.”
"Relative Race" previously won a 2016 Cynopsis Media TV Award for best new competition reality series. The Third Season debuted on Sunday, March 4, at 7 p.m. MT, "Relative Race" and will run for 10 episodes on BYUtv and is available for streaming on byutv.org, AppleTV, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Roku, Amazon FireTV, iOS and Android.
